| Customer Reviews: Wherein Things Take a Turn for the Worse March 18, 2010 Andrew Shaffer (Davenport, Iowa) 4 out of 9 found this review helpful
In "Ghost Rider: Hell-Bent and Heaven Bound," we learned that the Ghost Rider was a "weapon of Heaven." New series writer Jason Aaron turned 30+ years of Ghost Rider history on its head. Johnny Blaze's "deal with the devil" to become Ghost Rider? Simply a ruse of an angel named Zadkiel. While the change angered some fans, Aaron's writing was just too good to pass up -- Johnny Blaze was on the road, facing off against cannibalistic ghosts and machine-gun-toting nurses. It looked like a new day for the Ghost Rider. When Marvel announced the return of the 90s Ghost Rider, Danny Ketch, it didn't look like things could get any better. And then...
...things took a turn for the worse. Series artist Roland Boschi left. He was replaced by Tan Eng Huat, whose cartoonish style didn't mesh with the dark tone that Boschi had set. (Huat's version of Blackout looks inexplicably like an old woman.) In "The Last Stand," Aaron did bring back Danny Ketch...as an agent of Zadkiel, whose job was to absorb the powers of the Ghost Riders. Yes, Ghost Riders plural: It turns out that each culture has its own Spirit of Vengeance, complete with a flaming skull and mode of transportation suited to his or her culture. How were the Ghost Rider powers distributed? Based on population? Both China and Japan have one, America has two, there's one from Tibet apparently... If this sounds like the Supernatural Olympics, you wouldn't be far off.
Based on Aaron's first Ghost Rider collection, I assumed that the complicated mythology of the Ghost Riders would be put to rest for a while as Johnny Blaze faced off against more cannibalistic ghosts and other weird threats. Instead, the mythology got more complicated and, by the time the sword-wielding angel stormed the gates of Heaven, I had tuned out.
