Amazon Exclusive: Seth Godin Reviews Rework

Seth Godin is the author of Linchpin, Tribes, The Dip, Purple Cow, All Marketers Are Liars, and Permission Marketing, as well as other international bestsellers. He is consistently one of the 25 most widely read bloggers in the English language. Read his exclusive Amazon guest review of Rework:

This book will make you uncomfortable.

Depending on what you do all day, it might make you extremely uncomfortable.

That's a very good thing, because you deserve it. We all do.

Jason and David have broken all the rules and won. Again and again they've demonstrated that the regular way isn't necessarily the right way. They just don't say it, they do it. And they do it better than just about anyone has any right to expect.

This book is short, fast, sharp and ready to make a difference. It takes no prisoners, spares no quarter, and gives you no place to hide, all at the same time.

There, my review is almost as long as the first chapter of the book. I can't imagine what possible excuse you can dream up for not buying this book for every single person you work with, right now.

Stop reading the review. Buy the book.--Seth Godin

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing   March 10, 2010

This book is unlike most business books, both in its brevity and message. Many of the ideas are common sense, but a lot of the business books out there, especially when it comes to startups, stray pretty far from the tenets advocated here. Notable ones include:

- Don't take outside investment
- Don't try to grow indefinitely
- Don't always listen to your customers
- Scratch your own itch

Recently, I've read a lot of business books focused at starting a small business, but this is the first one that really strives to keep you honest, not just feed you hype. Business books, schools and people themselves like to over-complicate business and I'm planning to keep Rework on my desk as a reality check for myself and my business.

I also truly appreciate the brevity. Way too many business (and technical) books are padded with reiteration of a few key points just to get to a respectable page count. Jason and David respect our time enough to keep it short and to the point. If you need reiteration, read it again; I know that's what I plan on doing!

5 out of 5 stars Very motivating and refreshing   March 9, 2010

I've pre-ordered the book and received it yesterday, March 08, just a day before it officially started selling. Initially I was going just to read few chapters, but ended up reading the whole book in under 2 hours. It doesn't contain any secret techniques, doesn't use fancy "business" terms, in fact it mocks most of these things, and does it pretty good. You can tell that authors do enjoy their work, and especially the flexibility of their business, that's why the book criticizes such things as boring meetings, complicated business plans etc. Even if you don't agree with everything they say, there's still that nice feeling when you realize that authors have built very successful business having these concepts in mind. Also, "Re-Work" has very small chapters, which I find a real advantage, as every time you turn the page, you read something new. Overall, my best recommendations.

5 out of 5 stars Everything You Need. Nothing You Don't.   March 11, 2010

This book is short and to the point. It has everything you could ever need in experienced advice in a brilliantly separated way. The simple fact that I got it and was done reading it in 5hrs speaks volumes about it's quality. I just couldn't put it down. Everything just makes sense. And even better, it's applicable! It's not just some advice spewed out by people making theories on what they think will work. It's actual experience being given to you on what does work and what doesn't.

This is definitely a book everyone should read. Doesn't matter if you're starting a business, already running a business, or just sitting around in a cubicle. This book applies to everyone and anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Common Sense Guide to Growing a Business   March 10, 2010

I REALLY enjoyed reading Rework.

This book shows us that most of the stuff you learned or are learning in business school might actually be wrong. It might actually be outdated, and it might not work anymore. Bust most important of all, it's being done differently by a couple of guys who walk the walk and don't just write the books. It's also pretty easy. It's not heavy concepts and skills that require a MBA and years in school, it's advice and skills that everyone can use to be a lot more successful!

I sat down to read the book on my kindle and wanted to just read a bit, get a taste if you will... But I found myself hooked and I read the entire book in one sitting. It's a fast and easy read and should be enjoyed quickly.

Jason & David want you to read it quickly so you can get down to doing work that matters.

Thanks for writing this book. I'll be referring to it often.

Noah

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing and Inspirational   March 11, 2010

Having followed these two authors throughout the past five years with Ruby on Rails and 37signals rapid growth I got wind of this book. At first I thought it would be just another book that gave "perls of wisdom", had little direction, made you feel good but in the end gave no value. However, I am pleased to report that I feel just the opposite. I sat down to read this on my kindle last night for an hour and ended up reading the whole thing.

If you have ever had a great idea and felt a little voice telling you that maybe you should start a business then this book is for you. This book is especially powerful if you are someone who is tech savvy, and are thinking about using the power of the internet to grow an idea into a business. Regardless of who you are, I am confident that this book will make you get off your butt and be get something done, when you previously thought you had to jump through hoops.

The best $10 I have spent in years.
